7th October 2021
We have been made aware of an issue when using Chromecast to stream from the BBC Sounds app to our network players.
All of our Chromecast-built in integrations are tested and fully certified by Google to meet their stringent UX and playback requirements, and we aren’t aware of any other Cast-enabled apps exhibiting similar issues with our products.
As such it’s most likely that this issue stems from the BBC sounds app and the implementation of Chromecast within their app, and unlikely to be an issue with our software.
We will continue to push our Google cast partners for more information and feedback on this and we will provide a further update as soon as we know more.
Please accept our apologies for any continued inconvenience or disappointment this may cause.
20th October 2021
Our software engineering team have been in contact with BBC about this issue, who have informed us that they have recently updated their service and it has caused a problem with a number of customers. We’re investigating if the BBC could put a provision in their streams for the affected products or if our cast partners could update the Cast software that our products run with a view to resolving this. Please rest assured that we are treating this as a priority and we aim to have a further update for you on this very soon.
3rd November 2021
Our software team have identified what they believe to be the exact issue affecting Chromecast on some products and services, and are currently in the process of implementing a software fix for the device firmware that they are hopeful will resolve this issue once and for all.
This software fix is still in the early stages of development at the moment, however, and will need to go through rigorous testing on all our devices, and will also need to be signed off and certificated by our Google cast partners and by Google themselves before we are allowed to officially release it.
As such we are currently unable to give a firm release date for the anticipated software fix. However, please rest assured that we are still treating this as a priority, and will make more information available as and when we have it.
17th December 2021
Our software team now have a firmware update which includes an update to the Cast software which we believe will resolve the issue that customers have experienced with trying to cast from the BBC Sounds App as well as address another known issue with casting from Apple Music.
If you would like to try this new firmware update and help us to test it before it goes to general release in January 2022 please contact our Customer Support team directly and let us know the unit I.D of your network player. We can then move you over to a special firmware group to test this new firmware update for us. Please note that due to the Christmas period we will not be able to move customers to the new firmware test group after Tuesday 21st December until the engineering department opens again on January 4th.
22nd February 2022
We are confident that we now have a software fix that resolves the issue of not being able to Chromecast from the BBC sounds app to our network players. However, this fix needs to be approved by Google first before it can go to general release and we are currently working with them to get this certified as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you would like to get the new firmware ahead of the general release please contact our Customer Support team directly with the unit I.D of your device and we can move you over to a special firmware group where you'll be able to update your device and receive the updated version as part of a test group. Your player's unit I.D will starts with 00 and can be found in Settings > Firmware > Version > and scrolling to Unit ID, or by navigating to the settings page of the StreamMagic app and scrolling down to Device ID.
