What is a transformer?

A transformer is the part that supplies power to our devices; be that an amp, streamer or CD player. A transformer consists of a pair of coils wound on an iron core. The AC in one coil produces a changing magnetic field. This changing magnetic field induces a voltage in the other coil of the transformer.

There are two types of transformer normally used in the hi-fi world, EI transformers and toroidal transformers.

What is a toroidal transformer?

Our first ever product, the P40 integrated amplifier went down in the history books as the first amplifier to use a toroidal transformer. This was a significant innovation and is now, because of its superior performance, a standard component inside virtually every hi-end amplifier produced by manufacturers since then.

Toroidal transformers are passive electronic components, consisting of a circular ring or donut shaped magnetic core around which wire is wound.

What are the advantages of Toroidal transformers?

Toroidal transformers are smaller, lighter and more efficient than other conventional transformers. The main reason we use Toroidal Transformers is because of the low noise and low electromagnetic interference.  This is thanks mainly in part to its shape and symmetry. The amount of magnetic flux that escapes outside the core is low and contained within the donut shape. The result is lower audio distortion and degradation to the sound quality, therefore ensuring that the resulting sound is clean and accurate.
